Inspired by the burst of new life in the spring amidst the deaths that can accompany it, these enamel earrings are a reminder of both the beginning and end of life. At first glance, the enamel birds and pink bows are sweet and sentimental, and closer up, one may notice that the bows are actually covered in poppies--a flower as synonymous with the deep slumber it casts in The Wizard of Oz as with Memorial Day and the bloodshed of war--and has to decide for themselves whether the robins have flown to a momentary dreamland, or up and away to heaven.
materials: enamel, watercolor enamel, copper, cotton, sterling silver, patina
length: 2 1/2"
width: 1 5/8"
*The ear wires are sterling silver
*I hand-paint each individual piece of my jewelry with enamel and choose strips of fabric for the bows that have the most aesthetically-pleasing placement of poppies. With these things in mind, note that each pair of earrings may have slight differences from the pair pictured.
